Each volume of The Advanced Guide to Guitar Chords presents a highly organized and efficient approach to the mysterious subject of advanced chords. Chord dictionaries are not the answer. Even chord theory does not offer any insight into unraveling the complexity of guitar voicings.
Guitar - The guitar is a stringed musical instrument. It is generally played with the fingers of the left hand[1]. The right hand plucks the strings with either the fingers or a plectrum, (guitar pick). The sound is produced by vibrating strings, which in turn resonate the body and neck.
Guitars have a body (hollow in acoustic guitars, solid in most electric guitars) and a neck. Typically, a headstock extends from the neck for tuning.
Guitars may be acoustic, electric (i.e. with electrical amplification) or both.
Guitars are used in a variety of musical styles. They are made and repaired by luthiers.
Guitars are widely known as the primary instrument in rock music.

Guitar prices range from a few dollars for cheap plastic toy ones up to a thousands of dollars for custom built guitars by the best luthiers around the world, using the best woods in the world. Everyone should have at least one guitar.
The guitar IS the most popular instrument in the world with sales exceding 1 billion dollars a year.
- Jazz Guitar
The guitar portion of this site is mainly dedicated to jazz guitar, archtop luthiers and jazz guitarists. I've been playing jazz since my early twenties and is a big influence on my guitar and ukulele performance.
- Surf Guitar
I love instrumental music and particularly the music that I got started with in the mid 60's. Ono of my al l time favorite albums is Tuff Guitar by Al Caiola.
- Lap Steel Guitar
Lap slide guitars, the first developed, which use a similar sound box to a Spanish guitar. These were originally called Hawaiian guitars and included versions that had a factory raised nut, but also included Spanish guitars with a nut extender.
Electric lap steel guitars, which include the first commercially successful solid body instruments. These were originally marketed as Electric Hawaiian guitars. There are two types: one that sits on the musician's lap and a second version that has legs and was called a console version.

The Advanced Guide to Guitar Chords - Volume I
If you ask, "When I'm playing a solo over a jazz song, how do I know which notes work at any point in the song?" then you may want to have a look at this book (Harmonic Anaylsis for Scale Selection and Chord Substitution).
You can glean this information from many sources, but this is a pithy, direct approach to the heart of the answer you're looking for. I would also suggest, for a broad, comprehensive, and beautifully written "Bible" on understanding jazz, Mark Levine's "The Jazz Theory Book."
